SUMMARY

A super visa allows you to visit your children or grandchildren in Canada for up to five (5) years. It's a multi-entry visa that allows you to visit Canada multiple times for up to ten (10) years.

You can still obtain a super visa to stay in Canada for up to five (5) years if you don't need a visitor visa. You can apply for a visitor visa (➨Page) if you want to stay for less than six (6) months.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

The following requirements must be met if you are applying for a Super Visa:

1- Family Relationship

You must be the parent or grandparent of a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada.

2- Invitation Letter

You must have a signed letter of invitation from your child or grandchild that includes:
  • a promise of financial support for the length of your visit
  • the list and number of people in the household of child or grandchild in Canada
  • a copy of this person’s Canadian citizenship or permanent resident document

3- Inviter’s Income

Your Canadian child or grandchild will have to prove that their household meets the minimum necessary income.

The child or grandchild who invites you must prove that their household meets the minimum necessary income. They must show that they have minimum income based on the Statistics Canada’s Low Income Cut-Off (LICO) (➨Appendix 2).

4- Medical Insurance

You must obtain and pay for medical insurance from a Canadian insurance company with at least $100,000 coverage. You coverage must be valid for at least one (1) year from your date of entry.

5- Other factors

Other factors will also be considered before a decision is made for your super visa. You must be a genuine visitor to Canada who will leave Canada on your own will at the end of your stay.

These considerations could include your ties to your home country, the reason for your travel, your family and finances, and your home country's overall economic and political stability.

WHAT STEPS SHOULD YOU TAKE?

Step 1: Obtain Letter of Invitation

You must have a signed letter of invitation from your child or grandchild that includes:

  • a promise of financial support for the length of your visit
  • the list and number of people in the household of child or grandchild in Canada
  • a copy of this person’s Canadian citizenship or permanent resident document

Step 2: Get Child/Grandchild Proof of Income

You must provide proof that your child or grandchild’s household meets the minimum necessary income. Examples include:

  • Notice of Assessment (NOA) or T4/T1 for the most recent tax year
  • Employment Insurance stubs
  • employment letter including salary and date of hiring
  • pay stubs
  • bank statements

Step 3: Get Medical Insurance

You must obtain and pay for medical insurance from a Canadian insurance company with at least $100,000 coverage. You coverage must be valid for at least one (1) year from your date of entry.

Step 4: Medical Exam

Since you are planning to stay in Canada for more than six (6) months, you have the option of doing a medical exam before you apply. This is called an upfront medical exam. To get one, contact a panel physician (➨immilib.com/PP) directly.

Only an approved panel physician can do a complete medical exam for immigration reasons. You must include a copy of the Upfront Medical Report with your application.

If you haven’t done your medical exam, instructions on how to get the medical exam done will be sent to you. You must go for the medical exam within 30 days of receiving these instructions.

Once the exam is done, the physician will send the results to IRCC and will give you a document confirming that a medical exam is done.

Step 5: Apply for Super Visa

You must apply for super visa from outside Canada. You must apply online with the IRCC portal (➨immilib.com/SV-Apply).

You may apply on paper if you can’t apply online because of a disability, or if you’re travelling with an identity or travel document that was issued to a refugee, a stateless person or a non-citizen.

Step 6: Get your fingerprint and photo taken (Biometrics)

You and any members of your family between 14 and 79 years old need to give your fingerprints and photo (biometrics). You only need to give your biometrics once every 10 years. If you gave biometrics in the past as part of an application for a visitor visa, work or study permit and they’re still valid, you don’t need to give them again.
You will be contacted to give your biometrics and you will have 30 days from the date on the letter to do it.
In order to give biometrics you need to go to an official biometrics collection service point. You must give your biometrics in person.

Before you go, check the location’s website for its services and fees at (➨ immilib.com/Biometrics).
