WHAT STEPS SHOULD YOU TAKE?

Step 1: Find an Approved Opportunity

Before you can submit your application under the Nova Scotia Labour Market Priorities for Physicians Stream, you must have received a written approved opportunity with the Nova Scotia Health Authority (NSHA) (➨nshealth.ca) or the IWK Health Centre (➨iwk.nshealth.ca) as a General practitioner and family physician (NOC 31102) or Specialists physician (NOC 31100 and 31101).
  • General practitioner and family physician (NOC 31102)
  • Specialists in clinical and laboratory medicine (NOC 31100)
  • Specialists in surgery (NOC 31101)
  • Police investigators and other investigative occupations (NOC 41310)

You must provide a copy of a signed Return for Service Agreement with the Nova Scotia Department of Health and Wellness indicating commitment to live and work in Nova Scotia for a minimum period of two (2) years.

Step 2: Create Express Entry Profile

In order to be invited to apply under Nova Scotia Labour Market Priorities for Physicians Stream, you must create an Express Entry Profile (➨page) for yourself. Within your Express Entry profile make sure you have stated an interest in immigrating permanently to Nova Scotia.

Since you are eligible under one of the two (2) federal economic immigration programs (Federal Skilled Worker Program, Canadian Experience Class), you will be accepted into the pool of candidates.

Candidates must receive by email a Notification of Interest letter (request to submit an application to apply to the program). If the NSNP does not ask you to submit an application, you are not eligible for consideration under this stream.

Step 3: Submit Application to NSNP

After you receive a Letter of Interest from Nova Scotia through your IRCC online account, you have thirty (30) calendar days to apply to NSNP under the Labour Market Priorities for Physicians stream.
To apply, you must submit your application through Nova Scotia’s online service (immilib.com/NSLMPP-Apply) and ensure that you include all the required supporting documents.
If your application package is complete, you will receive a notification email within sixty (60) days of the date the NSNP receives your application confirming that your application has been received and accepted for consideration. This will include your NSNP file number.
Your application will only be considered for assessment while your federal Express Entry profile is active. Once your Express Entry profile is no longer available for nomination, you will no longer be eligible under this stream with your current application.
An NSNP officer will contact you if additional information is needed to assess your application and will tell you how to send the information.
If your application is approved, you will receive a nomination certificate through the Express Entry portal. The NSNP will also email you a nomination certificate that you should retain for your records.

You must accept the nomination within thirty (30) days after it is issued through the Express Entry portal in order to receive an Invitation to Apply for permanent residence.

When you accept a nomination, you are awarded 600 additional points in the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) (➨page). This will help you quickly get invited to apply for permanent residence through your Express Entry profile.

Step 4: Apply for Permanent Residence

You can only apply for permanent residence (➨page) through Express Entry if you’ve received an invitation to apply.

Your Express Entry invitation to apply is valid for sixty (60) days only.

Apply for a Bridging Open Work Permit (if applicable)

For those of you who are in Nova Scotia on a valid work permit, once you submit your complete PR application, you may apply for a Bridging Open Work Permit (BOWP) (➨page). This will let you continue working on a valid work permit until your PR application is finalized.

Step 5: Landing in Canada

If your application is approved, you will be asked to pay your right of permanent residence fee if you haven’t already done so. You will receive a Confirmation of Permanent Residence (CoPR) and if you are from a country that requires a visa you will also be issued a permanent resident visa.

You will only become a Permanent Resident of Canada when you cross a Canadian port of entry. This is referred to as ‘landing in Canada’ (➨page).

You must land in Canada before the expiry date, which appears on your Canada Immigration Visa. Usually, the expiry date is one (1) year from the time medical examinations were completed. As this is not always the case, be sure to verify the expiry date as soon as the Canada Immigration Visa is received.
