WHAT STEPS SHOULD YOU TAKE?

Step 1: Work in Nova Scotia

In order to be qualified under the Nova Scotia Experience: Express Entry Stream and submit your application, you must have completed equivalent of one (1) year authorized work experience in Nova Scotia in an eligible occupation.
As a foreign worker in Canada, you first need to find an employer and secure the job for yourself. The criteria for your job in Nova Scotia are explained in “Minimum Requirements”.

Step 2: Create Express Entry Profile

In order to be invited to apply under Nova Scotia Experience: Express Entry Stream, you must create an Express Entry Profile (➨page) for yourself. Within your Express Entry profile make sure you have stated an interest in immigrating permanently to Nova Scotia.

Since you are eligible under one of the three (3) federal economic immigration programs (Federal Skilled Worker Program, Federal Skilled Trades Program, Canadian Experience Class), you will be accepted into the pool of candidates.
Candidates must receive by email a Notification of Interest letter (request to submit an application to apply to the program). If the NSNP does not ask you to submit an application, you are not eligible for consideration under this stream.

Step 3: Submit Application to NSNP

After you receive a Letter of Interest from Nova Scotia through your IRCC online account, you have thirty (30) calendar days to apply to NSNP under the Nova Scotia Experience: Express Entry stream.
To apply, you must submit your application through Nova Scotia’s online service (➨immilib.com/NSEE-Apply) and ensure that you include all the required supporting documents.

If your application package is complete, you will receive a notification email within sixty (60) days of the date the NSNP receives your application confirming that your application has been received and accepted for consideration. This will include your NSNP file number.

Your application will only be considered for assessment while your federal Express Entry profile is active. Once your Express Entry profile is no longer available for nomination, you will no longer be eligible under this stream with your current application.

An NSNP officer will contact you if additional information is needed to assess your application and will tell you how to send the information. You may have to attend an in-person interview in Nova Scotia. You will be notified if such an interview is required.

If your application is approved, you will receive a nomination certificate through the Express Entry portal. The NSNP will also email you a nomination certificate that you should retain for your records.

You must accept the nomination within thirty (30) days after it is issued through the Express Entry portal in order to receive an Invitation to Apply for permanent residence.

When you accept a nomination, you are awarded 600 additional points in the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) (➨page). This will help you quickly get invited to apply for permanent residence through your Express Entry profile.

Step 4: Apply for Permanent Residence

You can only apply for permanent residence (➨page) through Express Entry if you’ve received an invitation to apply.

Your Express Entry invitation to apply is valid for sixty (60) days only.

Apply for a Bridging Open Work Permit (if applicable)

For those of you who are in Nova Scotia on a valid work, once you submit your complete PR application, you may apply for a Bridging Open Work Permit (BOWP) (➨page). This will let you continue working on a valid work permit until your PR application is finalized.

Step 5: Landing in Canada

If your application is approved, you will be asked to pay your right of permanent residence fee if you haven’t already done so. You will receive a Confirmation of Permanent Residence (CoPR) and if you are from a country that requires a visa you will also be issued a permanent resident visa.

You will only become a Permanent Resident of Canada when you cross a Canadian port of entry. This is referred to as ‘landing in Canada’ (➨page).

You must land in Canada before the expiry date, which appears on your Canada Immigration Visa. Usually, the expiry date is one (1) year from the time medical examinations were completed. As this is not always the case, be sure to verify the expiry date as soon as the Canada Immigration Visa is received.
