SUMMARY
Work Permit through International Mobility Program (IMP)
If you are a spouse/common-law partner or dependent child of someone working or studying temporarily in Canada, or applying for permanent residence being sponsored as a spouse or common-law partner from inside Canada, or if you are a family member of an economic PR applicant, you may be eligible for an open work permit under International Mobility Program (IMP). Qualified candidates are exempted from the Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) (➨immilib.com/LMIA) under some LMIA exemption codes including the following:
- C41: Spouses or common-law partners of high – skilled workers (TEER 0 through 3)
- C42: Spouses or common-law partners of full-time students
- C46: Dependent child of a high-skilled worker (TEER 0 to 3)
- C47: Spouse or common-law partner of a low-skilled worker (TEER 4 or 5)
- C48: Dependent child of a low-skilled worker (TEER 4 or 5)
- C49: Family members of Economic PR applicants
- A74: Open work permit pilot for permanent residence applicants in the spouse or common-law partner in Canada

Exemption code C41 (spouse) and C46 (dependent child):
You may be eligible for an open work permit under exemption code C41 if you are a spouse or dependent child of a skilled worker who is employed in an occupation that falls within National Occupational Classification (NOC) TEER 0, 1, 2 or 3 (➨Appendix 1) and holds a work permit that is valid for a period of at least six (6) months, or, if working without a work permit, presents evidence that he/she will be working for a minimum of six (6) months.
Work permit may be issued for a period that ends no later than the date your spouse (or parent) is authorized to work in Canada.
Exemption code C47 (spouse) and C48 (dependent child):
You may be eligible for an open work permit under exemption code C47 or C48 if you are a spouse or dependent child of a skilled worker who is employed in an occupation that falls within National Occupational Classification (NOC) TEER 4 or 5 (➨Appendix 1) and holds a work permit that is valid for a period of at least six (6) months, or, if working without a work permit, presents evidence that he/she will be working for a minimum of six (6) months
Work permit may be issued for a period that ends no later than the date your spouse (or parent) is authorized to work in Canada.
Exemption code C42:
You may be eligible for an open work permit under exemption code C42 if you are a spouse of a full-time foreign student at an eligible public or private post-secondary or secondary institution.
Work permits may be issued with a validity date to coincide with the spouse’s study permit.
Exemption code C49:
You may be eligible for an open work permit under exemption code C49 if you are a spouse or dependent child of a person who is eligible for an economic permanent resident pathway (non-family category) and is authorized to work in Canada for at least six (6) months.
Exemption code A74:
You may be eligible for an open work permit under exemption code A74 if you are a spouse or common-law partner or a dependent child (working age) of a permanent resident of citizen of Canada being sponsored for immigration from inside Canada (SCLPC) or in the family class (FC) as a spouse, common-law partner or conjugal partner (with a valid temporary status in Canada).
